Recall
In Topic 1, Integrate, we looked at themes of the 'new' digital citizenship and the ISTE standards, were introduced to some existing models in practice, and investigated the theory supporting the need for digital citizenship to be integrated throughout any curriculum.
3, 2, 1 Activity
Reflect on the key takeaway concepts from the last topic. Brainstorm:
3. Things you learnt
2. Things you found interesting
1. Question you still have
Extend
For this topic, we will be looking at the Australian Curriculum through the eyes of a savvy digital educator (that's you!), exploring creative ways we can embed digital citizenship through all subjects.
An important strategy to remember when looking at the curriculum is that digital citizenship extends beyond outcomes that have been 'flagged' with the ICT general capability icon. In order to look at digital citizenship critically and creatively, look for any outcome that provides students with opportunities to share their work or collaborate with others online! You may be surprised at what you discover!

Diigo
At the beginning of this session, we asked you to sign up to Diigo. If you are completing this module independently, and don’t feel comfortable with Diigo just yet, watch the short introduction video below about how to effectively use Diigo for your own learning as well as with students in the classroom.
Then, open up the IDEA4DC Diigo group. You will notice that Digital Technologies, Health and PE and The Arts have already been added. Using Diigo to explore the curriculum is a great way to support your planning. In this case, the highlighted learning outcomes are clearly shown in one place.

Take a look
Do you notice a trend within the highlighted language? Planning learning activities for outcomes with verbs such as 'publish' and 'share' will support your students to communicate and collaborate. Verbs such as 'identify', 'explore' and 'experiment' will be a strong starting point when developing digital fluency activities. Whilst reading through these highlighted objectives, discuss as a group any other trends you find that would relate well to digital citizenship themes.
Now you have seen some examples, it’s time to have a go yourself! Open up the Australian Curriculum Learning Areas and choose another subject to explore more deeply. Open your diigo extension and use the highlighter tool to make note of any learning outcomes that would support digital citizenship. This activity would work best in Stage Groups or Year Levels-be careful not to double up on the same section.

The game changers
Integrating digital citizenship does not mean adding more content to an already crowded curriculum! Now that we have unpacked the Australian Curriculum, let us have a look at how a slight change to an outcome can embed digital citizenship. Many curriculum outcomes can be 'hacked' in order to weave digital citizenship education into subject areas, for example, by adding in wording relating to online spaces (Mattson, 2018).

Another strategy is to consistently have age-appropriate discussions about copyright and fair use any time students create content to share online (Krueger, 2020). The following video clarifies this aspect of digital citizenship and explains why we need to be having these conversations with our students.

'Hacking' the curriculum
Here are some examples of how you can 'hack' the curriculum:

Foundation Year Science
Before-Pose and respond to questions about familiar objects and events (ACSIS014)

'Hacked'-Pose and respond to questions about familiar objects and events, such as digital devices used at home and school (ACSIS014)

Year 2 Math
Before-Identify a question of interest based on one categorical variable. Gather data relevant to the question (ACMSP048)

'Hacked'-Identify a question of interest based on one categorical variable, such as students' average minutes of screen time. Gather data relevant to the question and share findings, comparing to students in other countries (ACMSP048)

In small groups, choose a subject area and practise 'hacking' an outcome from each year!
